Arieh Tal is a nature/scenic photographer specializing in botanical subjects. The images displayed on this website were created over the course of nearly thirty years of field photography. These photos were selected from among thousands for their aesthetic qualities, and serve as representative of his work.
Technical: Over these years, a number of SLR and DSLR cameras were used -- most recently a Canon Digital Rebel T2i. A tripod was used to create the vast majority of these images. Manual focusing and exposure were also used to obtain precise focus and improve elements of the compositions.
Diagnostic Photography: In recent years, Arieh has concentrated on diagnostic plant photograhy. Correct identification of wild plants is often tricky. Accordingly, it is often helpful to create several images of each plant (e.g., leaves, flowers, fruits, stems, etc.) to use as a reference when attempting identification. Unfortunately in many cases, artistic and aesthetic criteria need to be sacrificed in diagnostic photography. Habit pictures (i.e., whole-plant images) are especially difficult, for clear separation of the subject from its surroundings is impossible. Nevertheless, it is still important to carefully attend to the surroundings of the plant being photographed, and find an optimal perspective of the subject. Refer to the expanded discussion under the "Botanical" section of this website for more details (forthcoming).
Cost: Images displayed on this website are for sale. It is not possible to provide free pictures as a matter of course to various causes. Depending on the nature of the requestor's project, it may be possible to make images available at reduced rates. Discounts are also applicable for those requesting large numbers of images for their projects. If you are interested in using some of these images, or others in my portfolio, I will need to know the scope of your project; that is, whether the project involves printed or electronic media; what the size of your audience is (e.g., a small club newsletter, a printed book, the publisher's name, if any; whether your work is intended to reach a national or worldwide audience; whether promotional uses are also planned (e.g., fliers, notecards, t-shirts, etc.); whether your work is for educational or conservation purposes).
Prints/Enlargements: Individuals who are fond of a particular image and want to have a printed enlargement should contact me so that we can discuss costs. Production expenses for producing single enlargements tend to be high, as photo labs usually offer discounts only for multiple copies of prints. Packaging and mailing expenses, and my own time, also contribute to the cost of enlargements.
Book/Journal Project Needs: I am particularly interested in helping authors and scientists in meeting their photographic needs for book and journal article projects. I am very conversant with botanical terminology and have a great deal of experience in photographing morphological characters of vascular plants. I have photographs of nearly 800 vascular plant species. Download a copy of the list of species for which I have photographs.
